Semites
   In ancient Mesopotamia and other parts of the ancient Near East, peoples who spoke Semitic languages. These tongues included Aramaic, Akkadian (Assyrian and Babylonian), Canaanite, Phoenician, Hebrew, and Arabic, along with their offshoots, as in the case of Carthaginian, an offshoot of Phoenician. The original Semitic tribes seem to have originated in the deserts of southern Syria and northwestern Arabia. over time they spread throughout Palestine and Syria and migrated into and intermarried with the populations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Armenia, and eastern Anatolia. Although the Jews are only one of many Semitic peoples in history, today the term anti-Semitic refers mainly to hatred of Jews.
